Practice Mutes

A practice mute is a must have if you want to practise without disturbing your neighbours or other people in your house. A practice mute drastically cuts the volume of sound to a more sociable level. When testing a Dennis Wick Practice mute I found that it cut the sound by about 20 decibels. The Yamaha Silent Brass was a little quieter and cut the sound by about 22 decibels. The way I tested this was I played loudly into decibel metre with a without a mute. A trumpet without a mute 100 decibels, Dennis Wick Practice mute 80 decibels, Yamaha Silent Brass (Old Model) 78 decibels. On the same test I measured a classical nylon strung guitar playing an open chord at about 90 decibels and a flute at also about 90 decibels. Brass instruments are one of the few musical instruments that can be muted effectively making them potentially one of the quietest which goes against popular opinion.

Practice Mute

This practice mute won't play as well as a more expensive one but it will be fine for a beginner who doesn't want to commit to buying a more expensive one. Will do the job but you will want a better one as you get progress

Practice Mute

The Silent Brass has a microphone in the mute which means you can listen to yourself through head phones. This is especially good if you want to play along with backing track. Not silent but very quiet.

Cup Mute

The Dennis Wick Adjustable Cup mute is a great first mute to buy. Not only can you use it as cup mute but you can take the cup off and use it as a straight mute too. The cup mute produces a darker tone.

This Dennis Wick Straight mute helps the trumpet to produce a more metallic Sound.

It's handy to have a separate cup mute and straight mute for when you have quick mute changes.

Valve Oil

It is important to keep your valves oiled on your trumpet. Valve oil will stop your valves from sticking and help to prevent wear and corrosion on the valves and in the casings.

It is important to grease

your slides regularly. This will help to stop the slides corroding and getting stuck. My favourite is the Red Grease as it seems to stay for on for a long time. Don't use vaseline.

Cleaning Brush

You need a snake brush to clean the inside of the sides on your trumpet. It's worth spending a little more money on a cleaning snake as the brushes on the cheaper ones can fall off while cleaning which can be a real problem.

Mouthpiece Brush

Keeping your mouthpiece clean has a big affect on the way your trumpet plays. Just a small amount of dirt in the mouthpiece can make a big difference to the blow of the instrument.

This trumpet pull through has a sponge like end which means you can pull it through the lead pipe dry. Cleaning the leadpipe after playing will help protect your trumpet

against red rot.
